The Crescendo

This isn’t going to be a long post. Nothing can be said that hasn’t already been said.

Yesterday the Yankees blew a ninth inning lead as the Marlins stormed back with 5 runs to deal what the media described as the most devastating defeat of the season. I say, it’s the most devastating defeat thus far – give it time. It’s still only mid-August and there’s plenty of time to go. If you think yesterday was bad I’m sure this team can lower the bar that much further.

As a fan I should be outraged. I’m not. I might be frustrated because all this was expected out of Spring Training, but outraged? No. That is a bridge too far.

Out of Spring Training the Yankees’ propaganda machine was working overtime. That’s the funny thing about propaganda (media types call it marketing) – it is meant for the buying public as a consumable. That part is fine as long as the content creator of the propaganda knows where the line is drawn – the difference between what is reality and what is fiction. Don’t drink your own special cocktails. It is almost as if, as an organization, the Yankees are consuming their own propaganda and they actually believe they can will things to happen. News bulletin – they cannot. Here are some stark facts about how they entered the 2023 season:

  • They don’t have a closer.
  • They don’t have a left-fielder.
  • They have one pitcher in their starting rotation.
  • They are scared every time the DH runs in any direction and are petrified of putting him in the outfield due to that fear.
  • They go all in on players who rarely if ever play. Montas, Donaldson, Effross, Rodon, Severino just to name a few.
  • They have a $260M+.

In short, this will have to go down in sports history as the most expensive non-contender ever assembled. Even more embarrassing, it has to be the most expensive injured list in baseball. I’ve written before how this team is nothing but a money pit. They throw good money after bad. They would spend $10K on a $10.99 screwdriver set at the hardware store just because they can. This flawed methodology is all coming to a crescendo now. Eventually everything comes to a saturation point where bandage solutions no longer cover the flood, and we’re entering the end game of atonement now.

At the time of this writing the Yankees are 5 games back in the wildcard. They might as well be 15. At no point was this $260+ roster ever a legitimate contender this season, and there needs to be a very serious discussion as to why.Thank goodness football season is here.
