The Trend
Hicks, Donaldson, Bader. You can see the trend.
For everyone who are calling for the termination of Boone and Cashman this should come as no surprise. Both are not going anywhere – even though they probably should. Instead you get the next best thing in the blame game. Decision makers never point the finger at themselves – they delegate failures the was they do any job responsibilities. In this case the common trend is to clear house. While they only assume a minority responsibility for roster maneuvers that haven’t panned out, they will highlight in greater significance the player performance itself. While this is true, and the players involved do bare that responsibility, the truth is the cleaning house needs to be done on both sides.
I think everyone agrees that these moves needed to be done. Hicks. Donaldson. Bader. I have no issues with placing Bader on waivers. I had listed him as an Illinois Avenue level player, but now I’m reevaluating that to maybe New York Avenue. Yes, he brings an enthusiasm to a mostly lethargic roster, but believe it or not enthusiasm is pretty cheap and the Yankees can get a better deal. You know who else is enthusiastic? Rookies. Players who are trying to make an impact and stay in the show. They are less of a strain on the wallet if you’re concerned about luxury taxes.I expect more of these roster shuffles as we go through September. What I don’t expect is a change in who’s making them. I don’t necessarily agree with it, but it’s going to be the same front office.
